Le scene di vita contadina si alternano a quelle dei combattimenti a poche decine di chilometri di distanza, sulla strada che collega Valencia a Madrid, circondata dai franchisti. Le vicende del giovane contadino Julián, arruolato nel 5o reggimento a Madrid, servono da collegamento. Prodotto dalla Contemporary Historians Inc. e sostenuto da un gruppo di intellettuali nordamericani di sinistra (tra cui Dorothy Parker, Lillian Hellman, Dashiell Hammett), realizzato da J. Ivens con l'operatore John Ferno e la collaborazione di John Dos Passos e poi di Ernest Hemingway (autore e voce del commento dell'edizione originale inglese), è un documentario appassionato e militante che il regista olandese ha voluto non troppo educativo né troppo politico. Uno dei primi spettatori fu F.D. Roosevelt che se lo fece proiettare alla Casa Bianca in una prima versione in cui il commento, poi giudicato troppo ridondante, era letto da Orson Welles. È il film sulla guerra civile spagnola che ha meglio resistito all'usura del tempo. With John Ferno and initially with John Dos Passos, who, when he left the crew, was replaced by Ernest Hemingway, Joris Ivens went to Fuenteduena, near Madrid, to film on the front of the republican armies. It has become one of the major films on the Spanish Civil War and one of the most important films in Ivens's carreer. Like in many other films Ivens finds a balance between the daily life of people and their struggle to survive. The strong photography, mainly by John Ferno, combined with the powerful editing by Helen van Dongen and the commentary of Ernest Hemingway make the film a masterpiece of documentary film making. In a first version the commentary was spoken by Orson Welles, but his voice was considered 'too beautiful' to be combined with the film, so it was decided that Hemingway did himself the commentary. One year later Jean Renoir made a French version, in a different editing which destroyed most of the power of the film.
